What Is an OTP?

An OTP is a one-time password sent to prove you control a channel. See how SMS OTPs work, how long they last, and how billing treats them.

OTP means one-time password. It is a short code that an app generates for a single login, signup, or device check. After it is used, or after it expires, the same digits should not work again. SMS is only one way to deliver an OTP. Apps also use email, authenticator apps, and push approval.

Definition

OTP means one-time password. It is a short code that an app generates for a single login, signup, or device check. After it is used, or after it expires, the same digits should not work again. SMS is only one way to deliver an OTP. Apps also use email, authenticator apps, and push approval.

An SMS OTP is the code that arrives as a text message. The app sends it to the number you typed. Whoever can read that text during the valid window can type the code. That is why a public SMS board is a poor place to receive a code you care about.

People also say verification code, PIN, or 2FA code for the same SMS. The glossary uses OTP when the code is meant to be used once.

How an SMS OTP order works

You choose the app and country, reserve a number, and enter that number in the app. The app sends the SMS. NonVoipOtp shows the message in your console. You copy the code back into the app before it expires. Most codes last a few minutes. Requesting a new code often cancels the previous one.

The wallet is charged when the code is delivered, not merely when you click order. If the window ends with no SMS, eligible orders are credited back. Starting prices are often about $0.02. The minimum deposit is $3. Confirm the live rate on the pricing page.

The console is private to your account for that order. It is not a public inbox. Do not share the number in a group chat if the code protects an account you want to keep.

What an OTP does not prove

A successful OTP proves that someone could read a message sent to that number at that moment. It does not prove a government identity, a unique human, or that the app will keep the account open. Apps add device checks, document checks, and later re-verification.

Re-verification is the case that surprises people. The app texts the same number weeks later. A one-time order is already closed. If you need the line to stay available, use long-term rental where it is offered, and test that the app is listed before you depend on it.

NonVoipOtp does not guarantee that an app will send a code or accept the account. Inventory and app rules change. One test order is more informative than a success-rate claim.

Safe use

Use OTP numbers for your own accounts and for testing you are allowed to do. Do not use them to take over someone else's account, to evade a ban, or to misrepresent identity to a bank or a government service. The acceptable use policy and the terms describe the limit.

If a code never arrives, wait for the order window, then check the wallet. Retrying ten numbers in a minute can make the app block the whole attempt. The troubleshooting guide on failed OTPs lists the checks that are worth doing first.

For automation, the API docs describe how to place an order and poll for the SMS. Keep API keys in the dashboard, not in a public repository.

Questions

How long is an OTP valid?

The app decides. Many codes expire in a few minutes, and a resend can invalidate the earlier text. Enter the code as soon as it appears.

When am I charged?

The wallet is charged when the OTP is delivered. Eligible timeouts are credited back. See the refund policy for exclusions.

Is an OTP the same as two-factor authentication?

An SMS OTP is one method of two-factor authentication. Authenticator apps and hardware keys are other methods. Some apps accept only one of them.
